Abstract

Many extensive molecular analyses of Murina had been carried out, but controversies still exist. Hence, this study aims to infer phylogenetic relationship among members of genus Murina using cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI) gene and to use phylogenetic approach to discriminate between members of the genus Murina. The phylogenetic relationships among genus Murina were further deduced, COI gene sequences (657bp) for 43 individuals of 8 species were obtained, among which the sequences of 19 individuals of 4 species in genus Murina were amplified in this study and the other 24 were retrieved from GenBank with genus Kerivoula as outgroup. The phylogenetic of Murina were assessed using maximum-parsimony (MP) analysis, MinimumLikelihood method (ML) and Neighbor-Joining (NJ) method. The result suggested that Murina cyclotis, M. peninsularis and M. rozendaali were not form monophyletic Glade. Echolocation calls of genus Murina were analysed with Kaleidoscope software. Due to insufficient Murina echolocation samples, the call parameters computed was not able to classify the populations. A more vigorous documentation of echolocation call data will be helpful to have a complete description of genus Murina.
