Abstract

A study was carried out to evaluate the effects of storage environmental temperature and seed moisture content on the viability and germination of Coffea !iberica seeds. Fresh and matured seeds of C. !iberica with moisture content of 37.7% were stored in four different environments: ambient room (28 - 30°C), air-conditioned room (20 - 23°C), refrigerator (3 - 5°C) and incubator (40°C) for 14 days. High temperature (40°C) was not suitable for the storage of the seeds. Favourable storage conditions for C. !iberica seeds were a cool and dry (40 - 50% RH) environment with temperature between 3 - 5°C, in which germination was 78.2% and viability was 73.5%. AccereIated aging of C. !iberica seeds caused a general decline in germination and caused seeds to deteriorate. It was observed that storage temperature and seeds moisture content were important when storing the C. !iberica seeds. A correct combination of temperature-moisture content was found to be crucial for storage of C. !iberica seeds.
