Abstract

Study on vegetative propagation of Swietenia macrophylla King. (Big-leaf Mahogany) by using stem and branch cuttings methods under different ages of stock plant and different level of Plant Growth Regulators (PGR) was carried out in the green house at University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). The aim of this study was to examine the effect of ages of stock plant on rooting of cuttings and to examine the effect of Plant Growth Regulators (PGR) on rooting. S. macrophylla has been considered as an important species especially in timber industry and medicinal field. Due to the high demand of Mahogany, the problem in finding high quality of planting materials for supply occurred. Seeds of Mahogany are hard to store due to the short viability period of seed. Vegetative propagation through stem and branch cuttings is an effective way to improve the population of Mahogany and the quality of the timber production. In the study, two different ages of stock plant were used; 6 months old seedlings and 8 years old tree. There were four different concentration of IBA used in the study; 0 mg/L, 800 mg/L, 1500 mg/L, and 2500 mg/L. The parameters beings assessed were number of roots, number of shoots formation, length of root, shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW), and root to shoot ratio (RSR). Stem cuttings taken from 6 months old seedlings was the best age of stock plant to produce highest percentage of rooting success, number of root formed, and root length. Concentration of 2500 mg/L of IBA was the optimum concentration to produce highest percentage of rooting success, number of root formed, and root length.
