Abstract

Modern life has eroded the cultural values and traditions of society. This has led to the transformation of cultural values and traditions including traditional clothing knowledge. Ethnic clothing in Sabah has the unique design and motifs that show the beauty of interest to be studied. The Murut Tahol community has a traditional costume called Pinongkoloh. Pinongkoloh is the traditional costume of women in Murut Tahol community in Sabah. Its design and motive have its own charm. But nowadays, traditional Pinongkoloh costume is undergoing a transformation in terms of its originality as a result of modernization. This research focuses on management of traditional arts that is involve in the strategies to preserving the traditional costume Pinongkoloh Murut Tahol as our heritage. In addition, this research also examines the elements of the transformation of motifs Pinongkoloh Murut Tahol. Data collection was done by using the field work method in the vicinity of Sabah, at Keningau and Nabawan. Informants are made up of embroider and tailors. This research also discussed the appropriate recommendations and strategies as a way of preserving and conserving legacy art by any parties involved directly or indirectly in the production of Pinongkoloh.
