Abstract

Bakun Dam is a new dam that is located in Sarawak, Malaysia. Not many research studies were done on Bakun Dam especially in sediment quality of tributaries, where no research study has been done yet. This research was carried out to study the sediment quality from rivers near Bakun Dam and from Bakun Reservoir. This research was important 10 ensure that the sediment not be hannful to the living things and to find a relationship between sediment quality and surrounding land use. Samples were taken from 12 stations of sampling site around the Bakun Dam on November 2013. Results included pH value, organic matter, particle sizes, total phosphorus and total nitrogen. This study shows that sediment quality such as pH, OM, TOe, TN and TP were influenced by surroundings like longhouse and residential areas, dead plants and logging pond. At the town area, TN and OM were higher than longhouse area. TP was higher at longhouse area than town area. TOe was significantly correlated with OM, TP and TN while OM was correlated with TN. This research is important for future references.
