Abstract

This study was carried out in the months of November 2013 and February 2014 to assess the water quality at Murum River, Belaga, Sarawak. Water quality parameters were recorded at three stations. At station 2B and station 2C, water quality was analysed at different depths (subsurface, middle and bottom), while at station 2A only subsurface water was analysed. For nutrients, the ranee for ammonia-nitorgen was 0.06 to 5.44 mg/l, for nitrate 0.054 to 1.267 mg/l, for nitrite 0.001 to 0.055 mg/l and for TKN was 0.454 to 1.157 mg/L The concentrations of nutrients in February 2014 were slightly higher compared to November 2014 because the water level of the river was lower in February 2014. The range for BOD, was from 3.1 to 4.3 mg/l, for COD was from 15.4 to 166.7 mg Odl, for T5S was from 6.0 to 127.2 mg/L and for T5 was from 0.158 to 1.250 1-ll5/ . The range of DO was between 1.08 to 7.64 mg/L The water quality index calculated shows that the Murum river is slightly polluted at all stations for both trips except for Station 2C at middle depth during trip 1, station 28 at the bottom and station 2C both middle and bottom for Trip 2 as the water quality index shows that it is polluted.
