Abstract

This project is a research of the application of lean production system (LPS) in local furniture manufacturing industry. LPS is the philosophy of eliminating waste by implementing the lean tools and technique. The objective of this project are to study the concept of lean production system in manufacturing industry and identify the application of lean that have been practice in the local furniture manufacturing industry as well as proposing an improvement for the implementation of LPS tools and techniques in that company. One of the furniture manufacturing company has been chosen as a case study for my project to achieve the objectives of this project. The chosen company is Ekapaksi Sdn Bhd that is a fully local furniture manufacturing company in Kuching, Sarawak. During the first visit, the interviews was conducted with their production assistant manager in the factory to collect a data regarding their understanding about LPS and their implementation of LPS. The factory just relocated to their new factory in Demak Laut Industrial zone so the implementation of lean is still in early stage. Furthermore, during my next visit I have been collecting a data on their production layout, their plan on implementing 5S until they have been implementing the first 3S in 3 month for their new factory. My last visit was observing on the changes on their production layout, their arrangement of things in the factory, office and their store area. The proposal for their improvement in implementing lean in reducing a waste on their raw material also have been made.
