Abstract

A study was can'ied out to detenni ne the total C (CT) and labile C (Cd in oil palm plantation at different ages compared to secondary forest, and to establish Carbon Management 1J1dex (CM!) as a result o f land con versio n from secondary forest to oil palm planta ti on in mineral soil. A significa nce difference in CL and CM! was found between 13 years old palm and the secondary forest, However, there was no Significant difference in CL and CM! between 23 yea rs o ld pa lm and secondary as the amount of the residues were more o r less the same. From this study, it Cdn be concluded that CL and CM! va lue were increased wi th the increasing of oil pa lm age. Labile C is importa nt as it can restored C in soil faster than C,·, thu s it is (l more sensitive indicat o r o f C dynami cs in the system. Residues in oil palm plantations need to be managed properly to increase the C input in the soil , hence gives a feflile soil and increased crop productivity.
