Abstract

This study aims to ga in insights into the effectiveness, strengths, weaknesses and problems encountered by the teacher when applying the use of genre-based approach in the teaching of a short story. A study was conducted in Sekolah Menengah Kerajaan Petra Jaya. The participants were thirty students from a Fonn Four Science 2 class. Data were gathered from the students' monthly test pmticularly on the short story questions as the pre-test mark while another test was given on a similar basis as the post-test mark and from the teacher's journals as well during the lessons. The findings indicated that the teacher encountered many challenges but was able to carry out the lesson quite well based on the genre-based approach. However, the incoflloration of the genre-based approach into the lessons can be improved by having constant practice and appropriate strategies in teaching and learning processes. There are significant find ings through the teacher's participation and reflection on using the genre-based approach to teach a short story. Hence, this approach can be used to teach short stories in Malaysian Classroom. As for the teaching learning cycle, it has enabled the teacher to guide the students step by step towards building up their understanding of the short story. Students were able to apply the knowledge gained throughout the lessons for them to understand the short story.
