Abstract

The objective of the study is to seek students' understanding of mathematical problems and the usage of scientific calculator to solve the mathematical problems. This is a qualitative research design which is a case study. Besides, this study also attempts to discover students' opinions toward the usage of scientific calculator in mathematics problem solving. The respondents involved are form two students of a secondary school in Kuching District. The research instruments for the study consist of short assessment on mathematical problems which has three sections. The data are analyzed based on the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards (NCTM, 1989; Sharon, Charlene & Denisse, 1997) for section A and B. Meanwhile, the section C is analyzed based on the adapted answers from Scientific Calculator Lessons for Middle School Teacher (Virginia Department of Education, 2001). The findings have identified the three categories of the scientific calculator usage in mathematics problem solving, which are active, neutral and inactive. Students mathematical point of views are also classified based on the Polya(1981) four-phase model. To conclude, students' knowledge on mathematics are also related with the students' abilities in solving mathematical problems with the usage of scientific calculator. Thus, it is relevant to reconsider the mathematics syllabus of lower secondary school in Malaysia.
