Abstract

This study is qualitative in nature with the aims to examine the relationship between selfdefense mechanism and conflict and the way of solution taken by the couple. This study also determines the effects of conflict to this couple's relationship and the effects of ego self-defense mechanism to the conflict. The participant of this study is one couple, who lived in Kota Samarahan and had married about five years. The techniques that have been used to collect the data were structures interview and observation. Data have been analyzing through verbatim transcription which using cross-case analysis technique. The results indicated that this spouse are using ego self-defense mechanism type repression, replacement, reaction formation, displacement, isolation, internationalization and identification which effects their solutions to solve the conflicts in their relationship. The result also showed that this spouse implement positive values in their relationship since their marriage. The limitations and suggestions of this study were further discussed.
