Abstract

This research was done in order to get the picture of how issues regarding Sarawak state election 1996 were covered in the local newspapers. Newspapers such as Sarawak Tribune (ST), Borneo Post (BP), The People's Mirror (PM) and Utusan Sarawak (US) were selected for this research. Overall, this research covered the tendency of item, orientation of the item, focus of the item, format of the item, political party that highlighted, personality and image which were highlighted in the newspapers chosen. Therefore, contents analysis was used to measure the item and agenda-setting theory was applied. Sample had taken were from 27th August 1996 during the nomination day until the last day of pooling, 9th September 1996. Findings show that local newspapers published more positive item on BN candidates and leaders. It also shows that local newspapers published a lot of item that aimed to inform and persuade rather than to educate. Besides that, these newspapers publish items involving candidates and party's leaders with positive image. This might be due to by the aim of the particular newspaper that is to support the BN candidates and its component party.
