Abstract

The study aims to examine the determination of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from 1970 to 2004 in five ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The macroeconomic factors that determined inflows of FDI in this analysis include market size, openness of the economy, interest rate and exchange rate. Unit root test in this analysis show that all variable is significance to reject null hypothesis (Ho), and Johansen cointegration tests show the existence of single cointegration vector in the model. This means that these variables are linked together in achieving their equilibrium in long run. Market seeking is an important type of FDI in ASEAN countries. Economic growth and stabilization in ASEAN countries will attract more foreign investors. Therefore, bilateral trade cooperation and implementation of ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) will play an important role to increase inflow of FDI in ASEAN countries.
