Abstract

Self-mentions (“we”, “I”) are an integral part in academic writing as it allows writers to project their authorial presence directly onto the texts (Hyland, 2005). This study examined how self-mentions are distributed in creative arts journal articles. For the corpus, 40 journal articles were selected from Quartile 1 rated creative arts journals (20) and Quartile 3 and 4 rated creative arts journals (20). The coding of self-mentions was conducted using a framework based on Hyland’s (2005) interpersonal metadiscourse model. The findings were analysed based on the following rhetorical sections: abstract, introduction, method, and results-discussion-conclusion. A total of 925 self-mentions were identified in the corpus with 541 self-mentions in the Quartile 1 (Q1) journal articles and 384 self-mentions in the Quartile 3 and 4 (Q3-Q4) journal articles. The use of self-mentions was most prominent in the results-discussion-conclusion section followed by method, introduction and abstract section. This distribution pattern was present in both Q1 and Q3-Q4 journal articles. The results indicate that the use of self-mentions is linked to the functionality of the rhetorical sections. Pronouns such as “we” and the noun “the research team” in the method section for instance were used to emphasise the writers’ ownership and knowledge of their research methodology. Similarly, in the results-discussion-conclusion section, self-mentions were used frequently as writers signal their involvement with the research findings.
