Abstract

This study attempts to understand the perception of anime fans among the university students on the issue of Japanese language and culture learning from anime. Questionnaire and interview were incorporated for the purpose of identifying the degree of fandom of students from a particular university and their perception of Japanese language and culture shown in anime. The results show that the anime fandom for this particular university is at the middle scale. Other than that, anime is seen as a source of interest for the Japanese language and culture. It is positively accepted as a suggestion for being a teaching tool in formal language class claimed by the fandom that it helped to boost their understanding of the language and culture in Japan. Hence, the findings provide support for the implementation of anime in formal Japanese language classes.
