Abstract

This study aimed to examine the selection and use of language in the Iban community in Pakan, Sarawak in daily speech based on the domains organised by Fishman (1972). The domains stated are the domains of family, religion, education and friendship. The first objective of this study is to identify and analyse the selection of languages that occurs within the Iban community in Pakan, Sarawak. Meanwhile the second objective is to identify the trend change in the selection and use of language according to the generation of the Iban community in Pakan in the domain of family, religion, education and friendship. This study applied quantitative descriptive research method. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire to see the preferred language in the Iban Pakan community. The results showed that the Iban Pakan language became the language of choice to communicate in the domain of family, religion and friendship. Whereas the Malay language is preferred in the education domain as it is the official language and the national language of the country. Next, the data also showed that the trend of language selection by generation is influenced by social factors in making the selection of the language they use to communicate. It is hoped that this study will provide a new perspective in the language of selection studies and the use of the Iban community language in Pakan, Sarawak.
