Abstract

Slang is a language that affects the way people communicate. This linguistic situation has become a phenomenon of society, especially teenagers who are more inclined to produce a variety of new words based on the location, purpose and influence of the increasingly modern age. This study was conducted to identify the form and meaning of slang spoken by Malay adolescents in the district of Kabong Sarawak. This study also describes the level of differences in the use of slang language in Whatsapp application with face -to -face method. This study uses a qualitative approach to obtain slang language data in Kabong district. The researcher interviewed a total of 16 informants aged 10 to 19 years. Informants were divided into two categories, namely eight men and eight women. Once the data were collected, the researchers analyzed the data using the Radial Network Category Framework as suggested by Lakoff (1987) to analyzed the meaning of slang in terms of core meaning and peripheral meaning. The results of this study obtained 25 data on Kabong Malay dialect slang words but only 21 data were suitable for use in this study. Examples of Kabong Malay dialect slang words are ‘meres’, ‘pecah’. ‘nyeden’, ‘koyak’, and so on. Next, the researchers found that the level of slang language use in the Whatsapp application was higher than face to face because the majority of informants were comfortable using slang language in this application.
