Abstract

This project describes on the design and implementation of intelligent street lighting system based IoT technology for smart city. The main purpose of this project is to develop an intelligent street lighting system that can help in saving energy and reducing power consumption. In Malaysia, the existing street lighting system can consume up to 53% of a municipality’s energy consumption which normally cost around 35% to 45% of a municipality’s budget. This will result in huge waste of energy consumption and rises in electricity bills. Therefore, an intelligent street lighting system based IoT technology is designed to solve this problem. In this system, the light intensity and the auto switching of streetlights are controlled using LDR and IR sensor. The LDR is used to measure the presence of lights whereas the IR sensor is used for detecting movements of the surrounding area. During the daytime, the LDR will automatically switch off the streetlights and during the night-time, it will automatically switch on the streetlights with 10% intensity. The streetlights will switch on to 100% intensity only when the IR sensor detects obstacle or movement in the area. This system also includes voltage sensor which is used to measure the voltage of the system. Furthermore, in this system, Arduino UNO board acts as the main control unit and the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi module is implemented to enable the microcontroller to connect to Blynk application for monitoring purpose. The results show that the total electrical consumption for intelligent street lighting system is only 1.35 kWh per month which far less when compared to conventional system in which the electrical consumption is 13.5 kWh per month. The system also estimated that the energy saving can be saved up to 90%. The main advantage of this system are that it is energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
