Abstract

Child abuse is on the rise in Malaysia. Child abuse is committed by parents, family members, caregivers, and others. However, child abuse is violence to children's rights. The main concern of this study would be to raise awareness and evaluate the level of knowledge about child abuse among parents in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. This research has three objectives, which are to explore issues related to child abuse in Malaysia, analyses awareness of child abuse and child protection among parents in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, and to examine the impact of child abuse on children's rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In this study, the method used was the qualitative method. Data gathered through desktop research and a survey completed by 50 parents in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. Most of the respondents answered in the survey that the factors that lead to child abuse from a family aspect, social environment aspect, and child aspect are the parenting style, parental substance abuse, mental health, exposure to stress, parental unemployment, poverty, child behaviour, and child disability. Besides that, most respondents were alert to the child abuse cases in Malaysia. There are four types of child abuse, and respondents are confused. Some respondents knew nothing about child abuse since they weren't educated on rules and regulations. The respondents said child abuse violated children's rights. Some of respondents don't understand these principles of child rights. Child abuse in Malaysia must be addressed to educate society on the implications for children and future generations
