Abstract

There are estimated over 250 limestone hills in Sarawak. Therefore, we anticipated high abundance and diversity of land snails in Sarawak, since many land snails are associated with karstic environment. The current research aims to determine the diversity of minute land snails at Bukit Parabinong, Serian and Wind Cave, Bau in Sarawak. We deployed random sampling of five plots with 5×5 m2 each Bukit Parabinong and Wind Cave Nature Reserve, the snails were collected from various microhabitats such as decaying logs, barks, and tree buttresses. As a result, we found over 185 individuals comprising of 13 species from Bukit Parabinong, Serian and 34 species from Wind Cave Nature Reserve, Bau. ShannonWiener diversity index calculated by using Paleontological Statistics Software (PAST). The diversity index of Bukit Parabinong is 1.899 and Wind Cave Nature Reserve is 3.336, repectively. Therefore, Bukit Parabinong, has relatively low diversity when compared to Wind Cave Nature Reserve.
