Abstract

Tetraselmis species is a marine microalgal that is used widely known in the aquaculture industry. They are popular in the aquaculture industry because they contain adequate amounts of protein, lipid, carbohydrate, and fatty acids which are important for cultured organisms. Tetraselmis species is a flagellated chlorophyte that can withstand a wide range of temperatures and pH levels. In Malaysia, there are very limited study conducted to investigate the species diversity of Tetraselmis. This study is designed to study morphology and molecular characterization of Tetraselmis species in Sarawak water. The morphometric of the Tetraselmis chuii was matched to well described species as the morphology of Tetraselmis and is described to be in compressed, elliptical to obovate where it ovate with the narrower end at the base. The cladding of Tetraselmis marina was supported with strong bootstrap value in both Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference (ML/BI) phylogenetic tree. One of the Tetraselmis strain, Tetraselmis sp.1 was morphologically similar to Tetraselmis chuii. However, it cladded as basal species of the Tetraselmis chuii and Tetraselmis marina in both BI and ML tree.
