Abstract

LED lighting results in energy savings using lighting with higher quality and efficiency than conventional lighting technologies continue to increase in demand for almost every lighting application, including outdoor lighting for the football field. The metal halide floodlights implemented in the UNIMAS football field have a long payback period due to their short lamp life. LED technology adoption offers improved luminous efficacy and lifetime over metal halide fixtures. Hence, the objective of the research is to investigate the application of LED lighting on the football field for energy efficiency improvement and GHG emissions reduction. Besides, the football’s lighting system will be designed according to European Standard requirements, and the visual comfort provided by the LED lighting system will be analyzed. LED and HID lighting systems are designed through DIALux simulation software according to the lighting parameters set by European Standard. The wattage power and quantity of luminaires used in the simulation are used to determine the annual energy saving and GHG emission reduction. The payback period of the proposed LED lighting system is also determined, which involved the capital investments, electrical costs, and maintenance costs. The annual energy saving achieved by replacing the HID with the LED lighting system is reduced by 57% for class III, 56% for class II, and 60% for class I, which corresponds to GHG emissions reduction. The payback period for installing the LED lighting system is 1.29 years for class III, 1.48 for class II, and 0.44 for class I. This study provides insightful guidelines on the energy-efficiency improvement and visual comfort of the lighting system in the football field by using DIALux simulation software.
