Abstract

Traffic congestion is a phenomenon and problem that has occurred in recent years, which had a major impact and is an acute problem in some major cities due to several factors. This research was looking at the in and out flow of the car users between Samarahan Division and Kuching Division to observe its congested trends. This is because people from the area such as Pending, Serian, Padawan and Asajaya will tend to use this border if they want to go to Kuching as it will lead to high traffic congestion during peak hour on weekdays. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of roundabout and traffic light in reducing traffic congestion in Kuching, Sarawak by determine the number of queue cars and its time taken waiting at the particular junction before they can pass on the intersection. This study mainly using quantitative method and the data collected was by manually counted using tally meter and camera recorder on the ground which is at roundabout Kuching-Samarahan Expressway and Jalan Canna as well as traffic light Jalan Wan Alwi and Jalan Ong Tiang Swee respectively. The data were analyzed using mean and mode to find the average number of cars and its time taken at the junction. Findings found that the number of time taken of cars at traffic light is 49 minutes 42 seconds which is more than roundabout just in 4 minutes 86 seconds and the number of cars at roundabout is 897 cars which slightly higher than traffic light which is 686 cars due to several factors. Due to the certain factors and considerations, this research conclude that by installing roundabout is more effective than conventional traffic light in alleviating traffic congestion in Kuching, Sarawak. This study will be a significant endeavor in giving a wide and new ideas in transport planning for the future development of transportation.
