Abstract

The Javanese Community which had migrated to Malaya had brought also their culture heritage such as barongan dance. This research seeks to examine the concept and the various aspects of the barongan dance. The main objective is to find out the spiritual element which is present in the dance. This research also looks at the aspects of the challenges facing and the development of barongan dance in Johor. Due to modernization, the spiritual element in this dance is eroded and the dance in presented as entertainment only.
