Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between the four dimensions of leadership styles and job performance with leader - member exchange as a moderator. The study was conducted throughout Kuching and Kuala Lumpur and a total of 200 questionnaires were distributed. SmartPLS3 was used to conduct data analysis by conducting confirmatory factor analysis and Partial - Least - Square regression. The findings indicated that the leadership styles alone were insufficient to significantly affect job performance. In addition, leader - member exchange was able to moderate the relationship between one of the leadership dimensions which is transformational leadership with job performance. Throughout the research, various understandings were added towards the leadership style present in the service industry in Malaysia. While it is a fact that Malaysian leadership is moving to transformational rather than transactional or passive - avoidant, this study adds to the knowledge that transformational leadership is present with the help of leader - member exchange. Hence, leaders must further understand the social exchange theory in order to improve job performance in the workplace.
