Abstract

A linguistic taboo is a prohibition against an act performed by an individual to prevent something bad from happening. The goal of this study is to (i) identify and describe the linguistic taboo used among the Iban Betong community and (ii) apply Relevance theory to analyse the implicit meaning of linguistic taboo used by the Iban Betong community. This study was conducted to analyse the implicit meaning behind the use of linguistic taboo among the Iban Betong community. The research design is a descriptive study that employs a qualitative technique to gather and analyse data on the implicit meaning of linguistic taboo among the Iban Betong group. The researcher interviewed a total of 15 informants for data collection, all of whom are native speakers of Iban language and have been lived in Betong for a long period. As a consequence of the interviews, 20 data points were successfully collected and classified as linguistic taboo in the Iban community including taboo for newborns, children, adults and the elderly. To fulfil the study’s goal, researchers used Sperber and Wilson’s (1995) Relevance theory, which established two fundamental principles: the Cognitive Relevance principle and the Communicative Relevance principle. As a result of this research, the Iban community’s linguistic taboo helps to sustain group well-being while also educating them to be more polite in their daily interactions.
