Abstract

This study aims to examine the selection of language used among the Bidayuh community in various domains of interaction. This study was conducted among the Bidayuh community in Bau. This research method is a descriptive quantitative that uses a questionnaire as a research instrument. Part A consists of questions related to the demographic information of the respondents while part B contains questions related to language choice in five different domains namely family, neighborhood, friendship, religious and transactional domains. A total of 120 questionnaires were distributed to 120 respondents from the Bidayuh community living in Bau. Study data were analyzed in percentage to determine the total language selection. The application of domain theory (1972) was applied in this study. The findings show that the Bidayuh language selection is very dominant, especially in the domain of family, neighborhood and religious, while the Malay language is more dominant in the domain of friendship and transactions.
