Abstract

On 29 December 2020, divorce cases in Malaysia recorded a remarkable increase since the Movement Control Order (PKP) was implemented. In fact, the upward trend is also continuing to continue the Conditional Movement Control Order (PKPB) implemented in several states. According to a report from UUM Online, Senior Psychology Officer of the Counseling Center, Faezah Nayan said, financial problems are one of the main causes of divorce because many husbands lost their cause due to being laid off due to Covid-19. The number of Malaysians married last year rose 1.2 per cent to 203,821, up from 206,352 the previous year, according to the Malaysian Marriage and Divorce Statistics 2020 report. Not only that, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the report also showed the number of divorces among the country’s citizens increased 12 per cent to 56,975 in 2019, compared to 50,862 in the previous year. He said, interestingly by reducing the number of marriages, the general marriage rate for grooms recorded a decline from 50.7 to 50.1 per thousand unmarried male population aged 18 and above. "A similar trend was also recorded for brides which recorded a decrease from 47.0 to 46.2 per thousand unmarried women population aged 16 and above," he said in a statement. Mohd Uzir said the general divorce rate for men increased from 6.5 to 7.2 per thousand married men aged 18 and above, with a similar tendency also for women who recorded an increase from 7.0 to 7.7 per thousand married women population. Therefore, this study aims to explore a case of divorce faced by single mothers by exploring the challenges at the time of divorce and fill the life force time of being a single mother κατά time. The research approach used is a qualitative form of each interview session with 3 single mothers conducted face to face and through online. The results of the study have shown that single mothers clearly face stress in facing challenges during divorce.
