Abstract

This study aimed to explore perceptions of counsellor trainees on multicultural counseling competencies based on their personal experiences when conducting counseling sessions with various types of clients. Competencies are essential to ensure that the counseling sessions conducted are effective and efficient. The objectives of this study were to explore counsellor trainees’ understanding on aspects of competence in multicultural counseling, to explore the challenges they face and to explore counsellor trainees’ views on the characteristics of a competent counselor. Phenomological research designs were implied and a total of 8 counsellor trainess from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak were involved in this study. Data collection through semi -structured interviews and thematic analysis to analyze data. The findings of the study have identified several themes such as definition, session handling and awareness, lack of confidence, weighty issues, gender, communication, differences of perspectives, skills, accepting the client’s world and having empathy. The implications of this study will provide an opportunity for trainee counselors to add self-value and for counselor educators and related organization will provide insights in terms of teaching and learning.
