Abstract

Guava (Psidium Guajava) commonly known for its nutritional values throughout the world. The medicinal properties of guava leaf parts of the plant are of an important traditional system of medicine. The leaf part of the guava plant possesses economic value as it is easily available in Malaysia and South East Asia, guava leaves are considered to commercialize as organic pharmaceuticals. Additionally, a greater consciousness awakened in recent years on healthy and organic has led to an increase in natural product demand worldwide due to its bioactive compounds. It is come to know that most of the leaves extraction have referred to the conventional method with alcohol as an extracting solvent. Thus, the ultimate aim of the study is to produce a process design of Psidium Guajava (Guava) leaves in halal extraction alternative by using the ASPEN Plus simulation. The subcritical water extraction process and Peng-Robinson’s thermodynamic model are selected to be simulated in Aspen. The simulation deviation is less than 10% from the calculated excel result. The research found that the factors that contributed to the increase of phenol extracted yield in the simulation run are guava leaves solid to liquid ratio with Pvalue less than 0.05. The studies of the parameters show the phenol extraction yield favors higher temperature, flow rate, and guava leaves solid to liquid ratio. However, too high in these three independents variables caused degradation of phenol compounds. In the optimization procedure, mathematical equations were developed to ease the finding of optimum guava leaves extraction range in each parameter studied.
