Abstract

In this study, the effect of mass loading on degradation performance of immobilized bacteria was investigated. Three different wet weight of Idiomarina sp. ST4 were immobilized using gellan gum and the ability of different mass loading of the immobilized cells were tested by analyzing the ability to degrade 0.1 % carbazole (CAR). After comparisons between residual of CAR of immobilized cells with mass loading 1.0 g. 3.5 g and 5.0 g by gas chromatography flame ionization detector analysis (GCFID), immobilized cells with 1.0 g mass loading was selected as the optimum mass loading for immobilization. CAR residual for 1.0 g mass loading was the lowest, with 7.9% followed by 51.3% for 5.0 g and 57.4% for 3.5 g after 24 hours. Then, a 1.0 g freely suspended cells was used to degrade 0.1 % CAR to compare the rate of degradation between immobilized and free cells ability. This study portrays the ability of immobilized cells in degrading CAR faster, more efficient and they can be reused
