Abstract

Micromonospora spp. is Gram positive bacteria in the family of Micromonosporacea. Micromonospora is one of the sources of the various bio-active metabolites such as enzymes inhibitor and antibiotics. Micromonospora species can produce two different groups of antibiotics which are aminoglycosides and macrolide. Previous study reported that Burkholderia pseudomallei from central Sarawak were gentamicin susceptible compared with strains around the world which are gentamicin resistant. One of the species that can produce gentamicin is Micromonospora purpurea. Hence, the aim of this study is to detect the presence of Micromonospora species in the soil samples from selected areas in Sarawak by using three different selective media, namely ISP Medium No. 3, ISP Medium No. 4 and Actinomycete Isolation Agar. A total of 450 putative Micromonospora colonies were isolated and 100 were selected based on morphology for PCR for Micromonospora spp. Another 50 putative Micromonospora spp. isolates were subjected to antibiosis test against B. pseudomallei to assess their potential of exhibiting antagonistic effects on the pathogen. Results indicated that while none were tested positive for Micromonospora by PCR. Some of the isolates appeared to show antagonistic properties against B. pseudomallei, which need to be further investigated.
