Abstract

Issues concerning on the health care especially the relationship with doctors and patients have been discussed broadly. Most of the research and discussions concerning the health care and it based on the behavior and performance of the health care professionals with their patients or in the other way the patients’ perception on the service provided in overall health care services. This paper will discuss the literature on interpersonal communication (IPC) skills used by doctors towards their patients in the health care. The study will discuss and highlight existence, application and the barriers toward development and use of IPC skills by the doctors at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The main objective of the study is to examine the interpersonal communication skills used by the doctors to interact with their patients when giving treatment and delivering health care information. This study uses qualitative methods. A phenomenological approach was adopted in this research. In-depth interviews, focus group discussions and observations were used to study the interpersonal communication skills used by doctors in National Heart Institute Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using NVivo software to develop categories and themes.
