Abstract

The Bidayuh Bisapug (BBB) language is one of the languages spoken in Sarawak. The objective of this thesis is to identify the BBB system and structure in terms of phonological field. To achieve this objective, data were collected using upstream field research (Asmah Haji Omar, 2008), because this studies have not yet been conducted. The purpose of analyzing data is applied through descriptive linguistic theory as well as phoneme theory (Asmah Haji Omar, 2008). Five vowel phonemes are known in BBB which are /i/, /u /, /ə/, /o/ and /a/. Consonants consist of 19 phonemes, seven plosives sounds /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /ɡ/, /ʔ/, four nasal consonants /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /ɲ/, one vibration consonant / r /, one eruption consonant / dʒ /, three friction consonants / s /, / ʃ /, / h /, one literal /l/, and two semi- vowels /w / and /j/. BBB vowel cluster are only present in the middle using consonant verses consisting of two patterns which are, nasal-oral and oral-oral consonant cluster. The diphthongs shows in this language that has four types which are /aw/, /aj/, /uj/ and /əj/. The syllable structure of BBB is also discussed in this study. There are five patterns of syllable structure consisting of V, KV, KVV, KVK and KKV which are the basis of word formation. The word exists in the form of monosyllables, disyllables and trisyllables. The findings of the study show that disyllables words are most commonly present in this language.
