Abstract

This study was aimed to develop an understanding regarding their taxonomy and density of barnacles in Burung Island and adjacent areas. The intertidal shores around Burung Island and adjacent areas including Tanjung Bajong and Trisso Island in Sebuyau, Sarawak were surveyed for the distribution of barnacles for two days, 1st and 2nd September 2015. The sampling was done by using 0.5 m x 0.5 m quadrate (0.25 m²). Three replicates were taken at each tides zone; i.e. high tide (HT), mid tide (MT) and mean lower water neap (MLWN). It was determined that the highest density of barnacles occurred in most of the MT and MLWN regions between all six stations and the highest density was recorded in Station 6 while the lowest density was in Station 1. The density of all the barnacle species showed no significance correlation with most of the physico-chemical parameters in the sampling sites. Three species were identified, including Tetraclita squamosa (Tetraclitidae), Balanus amphitrite (Balanidae) and Striatobalanus tenuis (Archaeobalanidae). The distribution of the three species of barnacles also varied among the sampling locations. Each of the barnacle species inhabit three different areas, Tetraclita squamosa was found to be the most abundant in St. 1 until 4 (Burung Island), while Balanus amphitrite in St. 5 (Tg. Bajong) and Striatobalanus tenuis in St. 6 (Trisso Island)
