Abstract

Investors and stakeholders' interest toward climate-change risk had lead Carbon Management Strategy (CMS) been implemented by public listed firms worldwide as carbon management could help to heighten the performance of firms. The most important objective of the study was to scrutinize the relationship between CMS and the performance of firm among public listed firms in term of Tobin's Q, return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). The adoption of CMS in firms was measured by using content analysis of evidence scanning in annual reports. 200 samples of public listed firms in Bursa Malaysia in year 2016 had been examined. Non-financial data were collected from annual reports, while financial data were collected from Data Stream by Thomson Reuters. After accounting for control variables, the results showed CMS had positive correlation with Tobin's Q. This suggested that the implementation of CMS helped the public listed firms to optimize firm performance by increasing firms' competitiveness, capturing good perception from investor and improving firms' image in both investors and society. The results also presented that there were mixed relationship between control variables and firm performance.
