Abstract

Gender diferences in terms of language is not strange to the field of sociolinguistics study. However, the gender differences in terms of women politeness language among university students are still lacking. This study aims to identify the types and the frequency of use of politeness strategies between gender and frequency of interruption in their conversation. A total of 100 UNIMAS students from eight faculties were involved in this study. The questionnaire contains 20 questions was distributed to the respondents as well as group interviews involving eight male and.female respondents were conducted. The study.found that male respondents are used more women language strategies in their conversation. While female students interrupt more in the conversation than men. Majority of the findings in this study appeared to contradict previous studies on politeness strategies, however there still a small part of the findings in line with the women language theory by Lako.f (] 9 7 5) Key word: language strategy, women language strategy, politeness, gender
