Abstract

Phylogenetic study was carried out to clarify the taxonomic status of member of bicolor species group from the genus Hipposideros, namely H. bicolor, H. atrox, H. cineraceus, H. dyacorum and H. doriae. All of these species have similar morphological traits where all of them lack of lateral leaflets. A total of 22 samples of H. cineraceus from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak were used in this study, while a total of 25 samples from the five species of bicolor species group that are distributed within Southeast Asia were obtained from GenBank. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using Neighbour joining (NJ), Maximum parsimony (MP) and Maximum likelihood (ML) method using 419 bp of COI gene. All species within bicolor species group studied here form monophyletic Glade except for H. cineraceus where at least three evolutionary lineages within H. cineraceus were identified. This suggest that H. cineraceus may be consist of multiple cryptic lineages that yet to be described.
