Abstract

Village pig farm and commercial pig farm have been studied to determine the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella between those farms. A total of 8 samples were collected from both farm which include feces, water soil and feed sample. A total of 40 isolates was characterized through biochemical test to identify for positive Salmonella. High prevalence (80%) of positive Salmonella was isolated from fecal sample. One representative isolate for each sample taken from two different farms were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Overall finding found out that Salmonella isolates exhibited a wide spectrum of antibiotic resistance in both pig farm production with the highest percentage ofresistance to Tetracycline (100 %), followed by Sulphamethoxazole (87.5 %) and Chloramphenicol (87.5 %). MAR index of Salmonella was found high (all above 0.2) from two different farm. Molecular detection was done by PCR targeting fliC gene of Salmonella Typhimurium. 3 out of 11 isolate (27.3 %) were detected for S. Typhimurium from the village pig farm while other 9 isolates from the commercial pig farm did not show the presence of S. Typhimurium. These studies indicates that antibiotic resistance Salmonella can also occur in the village pig farm despite no antimicrobial use which later can posed hazard to public and farmers.
