Abstract

Water pumps are widely used in the industry and sometimes also in residential houses. Some house owners tend to install their own water pump into the piping system in order to increase the water flow rate. It is common to buy water pump directly from the hardware shop without specification analysis. When a high powered pump is installed, it produces discomforting noises due to the vibration generated from the pump when operating. The main source of noise comes from the point where the water pump is in contact with the beam. The pump generates high amounts of vibration levels which will then lead to high sound level as the sound level depends on the amount of vibrations. In this study, melamine foam is tested to see if it can be a good sound absorbing material. The properties of the material will first be tested before fabricating a product that will help the melamine foam to make contact with the beam. Structural damping reduces both impact-generated and steady-state noises at their source. After a compression test is carried out, the melamine foam shows viscoelasticity behaviour which makes it suitable as a sound damper. After two parts were 3D printed to mount the melamine foam onto the water pump, the sound level measured was significantly less than the sound level without the melamine foam.
