Abstract

Thermal accumulation in car cabin is uncomfortable and irritating when the car is parked under direct exposure to sunlight. Finding an effective and economical method to reduce the heat accumulation was the main focus of this project. The scope of this project only covered a B-segment vehicle. Three objectives were set in this project. The main objective was to determine the optimum combination of windows gap sizes that would accumulate the least heat in the vehicle. Ten different cases were experimented: fully enclosed, fully enclosed with sunshade on windshield, and eight different combination of window gap sizes. 8 points of measurement were set at different location in the car cabin and used as boundary condition for 3 dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The CFD software used was ANSYS FLUENT 16.0. The optimum combination of window gap size was with 4 cm gap sizes on all four windows which contributed a 20.1% reduction in overall temperature. The results show that application of sunshade help to reduce heat accumulation by 11.8% on the dashboard. The experimental results were validated with 3-D FLUENT 16.0 simulation. The simulation was in agreement with the experiment conducted.
