Abstract

A study on the morphometrical variations among 30 adult individuals of the spotted-winged fruit bats, Balionycteris maculata was conducted using voucher specimens deposited in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Zoological Museum. All of the specimens were collected from four major different populations which were from Malaysian Borneo, Sarawak (Northern and Southern), Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia (Pahang) populations. All of the specimens were morphologically analysed, in which a total of 32 characters includes the external body and the craniodental of each were measured and appropriately recorded. The analysis was done by using the Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA). This study identified that the best diagnostic features that can be used in discriminating the individuals among the Balionyrteris maculata populations at the four different places in Malaysia were HF, D4MCL and D5MCL for the externals characters and ZW and DBC for the skull characters. The suggested factors behind the observed morphological variations in the different B. maculata populations from selected places in Malaysia is that the different ecological forces between the populations for instance the adaptation through the foraging behaviour, crowding effects, breeding and the availability of the food resources.
