Abstract

Pulau Sampadi is located close to Pulau Satang Besar and Pulau Satang Kecil which is a conservation area. The objectives of this study are to determine the gastropods and bivalves distribution in Pulau Sampadi, it is also to study the species composition of gastropod and bivalve around an island and to determine the species diversity of gastropods and bivalves around Sampadi island. For species composition study, the samples were randomly collected at three different stations of Sampadi Island. While, the line transect technique was used to study the species zonation from high tide to low tide levels. The samples were preserved in 10% formalin, labeled and identified. A total of nine families which consist of seventeen species (14 species of gastropod) and (3 species of bivalve) were recorded in Sampadi Island. The distribution of gastropod and bivalves are influenced by their pattern of movement, the nutrient in the area and their surrounding water environment such as the wave impact. The findings from this study can be used as the baseline data for future study and management of the Sampadi Island.
