Abstract

A study of habitat use of Nasalis larvatus was conducted at Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary, Sarawak in two different sampling periods for 5 days each. The habitat use data that has been collected and recorded are the forest types, plant/tree species and the approximate heights of the trees where the proboscis monkeys were sighted. A total of 57 sightings were recorded throughout the study. There are 10 groups sighted during the first sampling and 11 groups for the second sampling. The food availability plays an important role that can affect the habitat use of the proboscis monkeys. Mangrove forest had the highest sightings of proboscis monkeys for both sampling periods combined. The Rhizophora sp. and Avicennia sp. are the most abundant plant/tree species utilized by the proboscis monkeys.
