Abstract

University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in its Landscape Master Plan has listed the planting of shrubs bearing colourful flowers and colourful flushed foliage to occupy the designed landscape area. Functions of planting shrubs species having these characteristics will improve the aesthetic value, environmental qualities when it blend with the utility of the surrounding. Study was conducted in UNIMAS campus which involved documentations of 3 plants for newly flushed foliage and 7 plants with colourful flower and also duration regarding their blooming and flushing. Pseuderanthemum carruthersii have longest flushing period which was 16 days while Mussaenda erythrophylla 'Queen Sirikit' have longest blooming period which was 75 days. The observations were carried out during December 2009 until March 2010. Based on total daily rainfall amount, December had received a constant distribution of rainfall for the whole month and might influence the flowering and flushing of the studied shrubs. For propagation study, Cythula prostrate has the highest rooting percentage which is I 00% and was the earliest species in forming roots which is 2 weeks after planting. Knowledge on flowering and coloured flushing of planted shrubs in the campus and their relationship with the environmental condition was also discussed and it was important as it would influence the tree performance in the landscape objectives.
