Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the use ofprinciple of rhetoric by the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. lllahathir in his speeches who was also a former president for party UMNo. In this study, it focused on the conclusion speeches that he made during UMNO assembly at the year of2000 until 2003. The main objective upon conducting this study was to identify the type ofrhetoric that Tun Dr. Mahathir used in his speeches. Besides that, this study was to analyze the purpose and the reason why he used this kind ofrhetoric in discussing certain type ofissue during his speech. This study has discussed deeply about the types of rhetoric by giving some relevant examples for each ofthe rhetoric. Furthermore, the discussion on the rhetoric that Tun Dr. Mahathir used in his speeches was included and it needs further discussion by giving the examples which was the quotation from his conclusion speeches in that years. Tun Dr. Mahathir was known as a knowledgeable person in using the principles of rhetoric and he can attract audience to stick listening during his speech. His abilities and knowledge in these principles helps him a lots in maintaining his power as a Prime Minister and also as a President party ofUMNO.
