Abstract

The aim of the research is to explore senior leaders' career development in police department. Career development can be recognizing in two aspects which is based on individual needs or organizational needs. In this study, the researcher focused on the aspects of individual needs. Four (4) research questions were structured based on the objective and researcher come out with nine (9) questions as the interview guide for data collection through semi-structured interview. Six (6) informants are purposely chosen with the criteria as a senior leader from police department that rank from Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) to Assissantance Commissioner Police (ACP). The research is conducted using qualitative research approach where the informants' understanding and stages about career development were explored. Research findings gathered from the interview sessions have answered the questions stipulated in this research. Overall, senior leaders from police department defined career development as promotion, employee satisfaction, career planning and management and career advancement. This research found that interpersonal skills and work-life balance as significant factors in senior leaders' career development. In order to advancing in those skills, factor that influencing it was academic. All the informants believe that academic could help in enhancing career development. Generally, future research need to be done to construct a proper model for the career development in Malaysian perspective.
