Abstract

Demands on labour force nowadays increased rapidly each year as the globalization become a national core business, especially in construction sector. Construction sector provides all kind of national needs and Malaysia become a well-developed country in the world. Labour resources a seen as the important factor to ensuring the successful completion of a construction project. Nowadays, the foreign labour holds the major composition of labour on construction project. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the factor of dependency towards foreign labour by the employers in the construction industry. The respondents of this study are the employers of construction company. This study was done in January 2015 in Kuching, Sarawak. Method of study used is qualitative method which involved interview. There are three objectives for this study. First is to determine the common criteria of labour recruitment and selection among employer. Secondly is to identify the factors that influencing Malaysian construction companies in hiring and depending on foreign workers and lastly to examine the impacts of foreign labour towards our country, Malaysia. Findings show that selection of the foreign labours to work at the construction site are based on their skills and also experience and the factors of dependency is not only because of low cost or wages paid to the foreign workers but also consist of other factors such as their attitude, experience and skills. The findings of the study also show that there are both positive and negative impacts resulted from dependency on foreign labours towards the country. Social, political, economic and health and security are some of the impacts of the dependency on these foreign labours. Lastly, this research also provided the recommendations for future research, in order to obtain a better data for future research.
