Abstract

Mangrove forests are degraded due to human activities and natural disaster. Realising the importance of mangrove forests to the environment, Malaysian government had announced a massive programme known as ‘Planting suitable mangrove species and other suitable species programme in shorelines of the country’. In Sarawak, there was no proper documentation on the success and growth performance of this mangrove plantation. This study was conducted to determine the growth and stand structure of Rhizophora mucronata planted on different location and also to determine the growth and stand structure of R. mucronata planted at different planting spacing in Selabat Mangrove Forest Reserve. Field survey was conducted by establishing two study plots on different location: Plot 1, three subplots were established at area R. mucronata with 2m × 2m planting spacing; Plot 2, three subplots were established at area R. mucronata with 2m × 2m planting spacing meanwhile with at 4m × 4m planting spacing , a total of four subplots were established. Stem diameter, total height, crown diameter, crown height, basal area, volume, Mean Annual Increment (MAI) and survival rate were measured and calculated. R. mucronata planted nearer to the sea, Plot 2 showed higher stand structure and MAI of all parameters compared with R. mucronata in Plot 1. R. mucronata in Plot 2 (96%) also showed higher survival rate than in Plot 1 (68%). R. mucronata planted with 2m × 2m planting spacing showed higher stand structure and MAI of total height and crown height meanwhile R. mucronata planted with planting spacing of 4m × 4m were stem diameter, crown diameter, basal area and volume. The survival rate of R. mucronata with 2m × 2m and 4m × 4m planting spacing were 96% and 70% respectively. Notwithstanding, it is recommended to assess the soil characteristics in each plot to obtain more accurate results and study on the effectiveness of R. mucronata as coastal defence also should be conducted.
