Abstract

Hard clam is distributed in Buntal and Sampun mudflats but no detail study on this species that leads to confusion of its scientific name. This preliminary study was carried out to describe the shell morphology by photograph and drawing of the shell and to compile data on ecology aspect which comprise on its density, distribution, and sediment analysis. Trial to rear the clams under laboratory was also carried out for 6 months period. There was only one species of hard clam found from Buntal and Sampun which is Meretrix lyrata (Sowerby, 1851) which was highly distributed in the middle of intertidal area. It has unique characters regarding shell colour, depth, length, width, and thickness. The sediment in Buntal and Sampun were consisted of particle of sand, silt, and clay. In the laboratory, clams were fed with a microalgae, Chaetoceros sp.. Large clams ingested more feed than the small clam. This clam can be considered as a hardy species because it can tolerate 14 days in tanks.
